During your work day you probably make multiple trips around your office. Whether it be to the copier, bathroom, break room or to another coworker, you’re likely to pass some desks along the way. Greeting your coworkers is a common courtesy, but how many times should you greet them if you see them multiple times a day?
Greetings are a good thing, it’s friendly and you may meet new people or get to know those around you a little better. When everyone from the bottom to top greets one another, it creates the impression of a more equal work environment. Plus, it’s free, quick and may get yourself noticed!
This all to say, after the first initial greeting, saying hello again 30 minutes later may feel a little redundant. Below are some good ways to give passive acknowledgements if you feel disingenuous by not saying anything. These will come in handy after the initial “good morning” or “hello”.
Passive Acknowledgements:
If after the initial greeting, the person you are trying to passively acknowledge hasn’t made eye contact with you, it’s best to skip the acknowledgement and continue with your day. One greeting upon arrival and a "good bye" when you leave for the day is enough. Passive acknowledgements aren’t always necessary but when you’re faced with the decision to greet or not, you'll have some options to fall back on.
